Why taking more photos might be making you remember less.
A well-documented psychology effect shows that photographing an experience can make you remember it worse, not better. Here’s what the research actually says, and what seems to reverse it.

There’s a specific, well-studied effect in psychology called the photo-taking-impairment effect, and it says something that sounds backwards at first: taking a photo of something can make you remember it worse than if you’d never photographed it at all.
Psychologist Linda Henkel first documented it in 2013, in a study where people took a guided museum tour, photographing some objects and just looking at others. Afterward, they remembered fewer of the objects they’d photographed, and fewer details about them, than the ones they’d simply observed. Later studies replicated the effect, and one found that taking multiple photos of the same object doesn’t fix it either, it doesn’t make the memory worse, but it doesn’t help.
Why this happens
The explanation researchers point to is called cognitive offloading. The moment you decide a camera will remember something for you, some part of your brain quietly stops doing the work of encoding it yourself. You're not fully disengaging, you're still looking at the thing, but you're looking at it differently, more like someone confirming it's in frame than someone actually studying it.
Henkel's own words on this are worth sitting with directly: "People so often whip out their cameras almost mindlessly to capture a moment, to the point that they are missing what is happening right in front of them." A related study found a second, separate effect worth knowing about. People who could freely photograph an experience ended up remembering more of what they saw, but less of what they heard, than people who couldn't photograph at all. The researchers behind that finding, Barasch, Diehl, Silverman, and Zauberman, describe it as an attention-shift effect, and it's a different mechanism than offloading. Photographing doesn't erase your engagement with a moment, it redirects it, toward whatever the lens can capture and away from everything a lens can't, like a conversation happening just out of frame.
The one thing that seems to reverse it
Henkel's research found something specific that undoes the effect: when people zoomed in to photograph one particular detail of an object, instead of just snapping the whole thing, their memory wasn't impaired at all. In fact, they remembered the parts they didn't even zoom in on just as well as the part they did.
The theory is that zooming in requires you to actually decide something, what matters enough to focus on, which forces a level of attention and decision-making that just pointing and shooting doesn't. The camera stopped being a passive stand-in and became part of an active choice about what mattered.
That distinction, passive capture versus active decision, turns out to be the actual hinge the whole effect swings on.

There's a live, ongoing research conversation right now about a related question: does relying on AI tools for thinking tasks reduce our own capacity to think critically. One widely cited 2025 study found a real, measurable negative correlation between frequent AI tool use and critical thinking scores, mediated by cognitive offloading, the same term used in the photo research. That specific paper also carries an unresolved correction notice as of September 2025, so its exact numbers are worth treating as provisional rather than settled, even as the general direction of the finding lines up with other work in the area.
It's also worth being precise about what this research does and doesn't show: it's correlational, not causal, and a more recent study on knowledge workers found a more mixed picture. AI use tends to lower reported mental effort, and it doesn't uniformly help or hurt critical thinking, the actual outcome depends heavily on whether someone uses it as a replacement for their own thinking or as a scaffold alongside it.
That's not a settled debate, and it would be overreaching to treat it as identical, airtight proof of anything. The mechanism it's echoing is Henkel's offloading explanation specifically, not the attention-shift one from the visual and auditory study above, those are two different findings from two different papers. But the shape of the concern is genuinely similar to what Henkel found with cameras a decade earlier: offloading a cognitive task to a tool tends to reduce how much of that task you actually do yourself, and the difference between a tool that replaces your engagement and one that structures it seems to matter more than whether the tool exists at all.
What this actually means for how you keep a memory
None of this is an argument against taking photos. It's an argument about what happens after you take one.
A photo you snap and never look at again is closer to the passive, whole-object shot in Henkel's study, it's not doing much for your memory beyond existing as a file. A photo you come back to, that you write something about, that you have to decide was actually worth keeping, looks a lot more like the zoomed-in condition that reversed the effect. The active parts, selecting, reflecting, deciding what mattered, appear to be doing the real work, not the act of photographing itself.
This is also, probably, part of why a photo you've forgotten about resurfaces so little when you scroll past it in a sea of ten thousand others, and why a photo brought into something you deliberately revisit tends to actually stay with you. The research doesn't specifically test printed versus digital storage, so it would be overstating things to claim paper itself is the mechanism. What the research does support is that active engagement with a photo, not just the act of capturing it, is what determines whether it becomes an actual memory or just a file.
