Why you never look at your digital photos (but you’d flip through a real album).

Research on physical and digital mementos found something consistent: physical objects get revisited, valued, and remembered. Digital ones mostly don’t. Here’s what the study actually found.

Somewhere on your phone or in a cloud account, there are thousands of photos you will almost certainly never look at again. Meanwhile, if there’s a physical photo album or a box of old prints somewhere in your home, there’s a good chance you can picture exactly what’s in it, and you’d actually go looking for it if someone asked to see old photos of you.

That’s not just a feeling. Researchers Daniela Petrelli and Steve Whittaker studied this directly, going into people’s homes to compare how families actually related to physical mementos versus digital ones, and the pattern held up.

What the study actually found

Petrelli and Whittaker's fieldwork, published in 2010, looked at how families with young children collected and related to mementos, both physical objects and digital files. The finding was consistent across the households they studied: physical mementos were highly valued and supported rich, varied recollection. Digital mementos were initially seen as less valuable, and in practice, were accessed infrequently.

That gap wasn't just about sentiment. It showed up in behavior. People kept digital photos and videos, but rarely went back to them. Physical objects, on the other hand, got picked up, shown to others, and folded into conversation in a way digital files just didn't.

One detail from the study is worth sitting with directly: when researchers asked participants to do a memory tour of objects in their home, six of the seventeen people didn't select a single photo, despite having plenty on display. The photos people did choose to talk about had specific qualities, they tended to be rare, irreplaceable, or tied to a particular story. Across the whole study, only 16% of the objects people chose as meaningful mementos were photographs at all.

Why physical objects seem to work differently

Part of the explanation is simple access. A photo saved on a phone competes with everything else on that phone for your attention, other apps, notifications, and thousands of other photos in the same camera roll. A physical object sitting on a shelf has no such competition. It's just there, visible, until you happen to notice it and pick it up.

But the study also found something less obvious: physical mementos weren't only photos or representational objects standing in for a memory. People held onto ordinary things, a ticket stub, a child's drawing, an object that meant something specific to them, in ways that had nothing to do with looking realistic or accurate. Digital mementos, by contrast, were mostly limited to photos and videos, a narrower range of what could actually represent a memory.

Related research on tangible versus digital representations backs this up from a different angle. A study comparing physical, touchable representations of information against the same information shown in virtual reality found that the physical version led to better memorization and understanding. Researchers pointed to the physical, hands-on interaction as part of the explanation, though it's worth noting the same study also found the VR setup itself was cumbersome to use, so the gap likely reflects some mix of hands-on engagement and friction with the virtual interface, not touch alone.

The honest complication

It's worth being fair to digital mementos too, since the research doesn't say they're worthless. Petrelli and Whittaker found that participants, after initially dismissing their digital photos and videos as less meaningful, often reconsidered that judgment when prompted to actually think about them. The devaluation wasn't necessarily permanent or fully deserved, it seemed to be more about digital mementos being poorly integrated into daily life than about them being inherently less valuable.

Their own conclusion points at the actual problem directly: digital mementos need better ways of being accessed and folded into everyday life, so they can build up the kind of symbolic weight and lasting value that physical objects seem to acquire more naturally. The issue isn't that a digital photo can't matter. It's that most digital storage gives it no path to actually becoming something that does.

What this means for how you keep a year

This research points to something specific worth thinking about if you're deciding how to hold onto a year of photos and memories. The problem isn't digital storage itself, thousands of photos in a phone aren't inherently worthless. The problem is that most digital photo storage gives a memory nowhere to go, no reason to be revisited, no physical presence that puts it back in front of you.

A printed, physical object seems to solve this less by being better in some abstract sense, and more because it forces exactly the things digital storage tends to skip: it gets handled, it sits somewhere visible, and it becomes something you can actually show someone else, the same behavior Petrelli and Whittaker observed driving real engagement with physical mementos.

This connects to a related finding on the capture side of the same problem: taking a photo in the first place can subtly reduce how well you remember the moment, an effect researchers call photo-taking-impairment. Between under-encoding a memory at the moment of capture, and then storing it somewhere it will likely never be revisited again, a phone's camera roll ends up working against memory at both ends of the process.

None of this is a claim that a printed book is scientifically proven to make you remember more, that's not what this research tested directly. What the research does show is a consistent pattern: physical objects get engaged with, digital ones mostly don't, and a memory that's never revisited isn't doing much for you either way, no matter how many pixels it's made of.
