Chatbooks alternatives (2026): when an automatic photo book is not what you want

Chatbooks turns your camera roll into small monthly books. What it does well, where it stops, and when one yearbook is the better fit.

The short answer

Chatbooks is good at turning your camera roll into small monthly photo books with almost no effort, and it also sells one-time custom books. People look for alternatives when they want one book instead of many, their own words and other people's in it, or full control of the design. A yearbook is one alternative: one printed hardcover for a chapter of life, with your words and the signatures of the people who shared it.

  • Chatbooks' subscription makes small books (up to 60 pages each) from your camera roll. It also sells one-time Classic Photo Books that go up to 366 pages.
  • Chatbooks lets you invite co-creators to its one-time photo books. Its subscription books are not described as shared.
  • At the starting per-book prices, twelve monthly Chatbooks would come to about $120 (Minis) to $180 (Monthbooks), as twelve small books.
  • A yeerbook is a one-time $129 for a single printed hardcover of up to 120 pages with worldwide shipping included.

What Chatbooks does well

Chatbooks is built so that you do not have to think about it. Its subscription turns your camera roll into monthly books, and it lists Baby's First Year, Monthbooks and Monthly Minis. Its help center says standard shipping is free when you pay in US dollars (Layflats ship Premium at $6 or Express at $12), and subscriptions can be paused or cancelled at any time.

It is also more than a subscription. Its one-time Classic Photo Books and Luxury Layflats let you choose size and cover and make a single book for an occasion or a gift. If automation and low effort are what you need, it does that well, and a yearbook is not meant to replace it.

What Chatbooks costs, in its own numbers

Chatbooks prices by book. Monthly Minis (5x5, up to 60 pages) start at $10 a book, and Monthbooks start at $15. Classic Photo Books start at $26 and rise with size, cover and page count: an 8x8 hardcover is $57 for up to 60 pages and $72 for 61 to 120. Luxury Layflats start at $115. The pricing page says annual subscribers get two books free.

At the starting per-book prices, twelve monthly books come to about $120 for Minis and $180 for Monthbooks, before any annual-subscriber perk. That buys twelve small books, not one.

Does Chatbooks let other people contribute?

Yes, on its one-time books. Chatbooks' own blog says you can invite co-creators to a non-subscription photo book by app or invite link. There is no limit on contributors, contributors add photos, each person can remove photos the other added, and a contributor can order their own copy.

What the posts describe is photos going in. They do not describe people writing in a book, signing it or leaving a voice message, and they do not describe a shared version of the subscription series.

Why people look for an alternative

One book instead of many: The subscription books are small, so a full year arrives as several books. Its Classic Photo Books can be much larger, but they are a different product from the automatic subscription.

The words: Automatic assembly from a camera roll starts from what you captured. The stories behind the photos, and what each moment meant, still have to come from you.

Other people in the book, beyond their photos: Co-creators add photos. A friend writing a note on a page, or a parent leaving a voice message, is a different thing.

Design control: An automatic book trades choice for speed. If you want to place every photo yourself, a custom maker suits you better.

The alternatives, by what you want

If you want to design the book yourself: a one-time custom maker such as Mixbook or Shutterfly. See our comparison of the main photo book apps for pricing and page limits.

If you want a premium, design-led album: Artifact Uprising or MILK Books. See how they compare with a yearbook.

If you want one book with your words and the signatures of the people who shared the chapter, and you do not want a layout project: a yearbook.

What a yearbook does differently

A yeerbook is a yearbook for a meaningful chapter of life, printed as a hardcover. You add photos, words or a voice note whenever life happens, or build the whole book at once from a past year, trip or season, and the pages lay themselves out. The people who shared the chapter sign, draw, leave notes and record messages from a private link, with no app or account. You can make one on your own or with family or friends.

It is one book for the whole chapter, up to 120 pages included, for a flat price with worldwide shipping included. It is not an automatic camera-roll book: you choose what goes in. It also makes one kind of book, so there are no sizes, covers or layflats to pick from.

Which should you choose?

Choose Chatbooks if you want automatic monthly books for a baby or everyday life, you are happy with several small books, and low effort matters most.

Choose a custom maker if you want to design every page. Choose a yearbook if you want one finished book with your words and other people's in it.

They can work together. Some families keep Chatbooks running for the everyday photos and make a yearbook for the moments that deserve words.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best alternatives to Chatbooks?
