Why cloud algorithms cannot curate your life
Tech platforms recognize that users are drowning in their camera rolls. Their solution is automated algorithmic curation: "Rediscover this day 4 years ago," or an AI-generated slideshow set to sentimental acoustic guitar music.
Algorithmic curation fails because machines only evaluate metadata: timestamps, GPS coordinates, facial recognition clusters, and visual sharpness. An algorithm knows you took 40 photos at a restaurant in Rome, so it shows you the sharpest, highest-contrast picture of a pasta dish.
It cannot understand that the most meaningful moment of that evening was a handwritten note your partner slid across the table, or the terrible inside joke that made your best friend laugh until their ribs hurt. Meaning is not a function of pixel resolution; it is a function of emotional context. Algorithms have data, but they have no context.
Memory requires subtraction

The act of choosing is where memory consolidation actually happens. By deciding that one specific dinner mattered more than fifteen others, and writing down two sentences explaining why, you actively encode the experience. You turn a disposable digital file into an enduring memory.
